Maku Brewing launches beer made from Viking Malt’s malted faba beans Sprau®

The first beer made from malted faba bean, Maku Brewing “Härkönen Papu Ale” is today available in stores all over Finland. “We wanted to find a new way to brew beer in a more environmentally friendly way. In addition to the environmental aspects, it is important to develop a beer that tastes good.” says, Jussi Tamminen, founder and entrepreneur of Maku Brewing.

The malted faba bean Sprau® was originally developed with the plant-based food sector in mind and with Maku Brewing’s project, Sprau® enters also the world of brewing. By bringing faba beans into beer, we at Viking Malt want to support sustainable farming and biodiversity. Today, brewing relies heavily on cereal grains, mainly barley. However, the growing support for regenerative agriculture has made us aware of the need for better crop rotation. Including pulses – such as faba bean – into the crop rotation of a farm helps to improve soil quality and reduces the need for fertilizers.

In beer, Sprau® contributes with a pleasant mouthfeel, foam and a balanced flavor profile.

We wish Maku Brewing and Härkönen Papu Ale success in their launch!
